Prophecy of Three

Prophecy of Three (The Starseed Trilogy #1)Prophecy of Three by Ashley McLeo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fantastic start to a series! Ashley McLeo does a fabulous job weaving together a magical story line that involves the past, present, and other dimensions. Lily, and the other powerful women in her life, are captivating, making me want to read more. Fans of Deborah Harkness will most likely be enraptured by this book.

Magic Awakens

Magic Awakens (The Witching World, #1)Magic Awakens by Lucia Ashta
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I just finished reading Magic Awakens - it was a fantastic start to a YA witching tale. Clara is captivating and fresh, as she finds herself struggling to be an obedient daughter to over bearing and uppity parents. Her rebellious nature leads to her sudden immersion into elemental magic. Her relationship with Marcelo takes on many facets, as his role changes from healer and caretaker, to a teacher, and friend. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

- One observation, I was "pulled out" of the story on 3 brief occasions. Once when Clara describes a tsunami, again when she comments on air pressure, and finally when comparing herself to Cinderella. In my opinion, these moments and references seemed out of time and place with the character.

The Blood King

The Blood King (The Brighton Duology #1)The Blood King by Liz Long
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I just finished reading The Blood King. This story looks at a dystopian world, where the best and brightest are invited to be KEY students in the capital city. The KEY is actually Type O. Students are offered education, training, and the chance to excel in the kingdom, but the price is high.

I'll be honest, it wasn't the most riveting read, some aspects seeming to reflect current political ideas, but it was solid enough to keep me reading throughout the whole book. I would be happy to look at the next chapters of this story.

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Darkest Minds is an interesting dystopian story focusing on the uncontrolled powers of a new generation. For me, the main character, Ruby, was difficult to connect with as the story started. Some of the relationships she formed with others developed only at a surface level, but given credit for being deeper. I wanted more depth to some of the supporting characters, as some of them were more interesting to me than Ruby. The story kept me interested, but it wasn't as riveting as I hoped.

Ink and Ivy

Ink and IvyInk and Ivy by Sara Martin
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Cover art is outstanding for this book!

Sara Martin captures the overwhelming experience of trying to plan out your entire future during the last year of high school. The stresses of finding out what you want, blended with the advise and pressure from those around you telling you what you need. Add to that, a budding romance, and you have a nice story about trying to find your own path in life.

The story is a bit choppy, and was lacking some of the depth I was hoping for. Due in part to being set in another country with some customs and vocabulary terms that threw off my reading as I had to google search the meaning. (Who knew a "flannel" was a wash cloth?)

Overall, and enjoyable story.

Edenhart's Rivalry (Kingdom of the Faeries #1)Edenhart's Rivalry by J.N. Tomczak
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I will be honest, I had mixed feelings about this book. I feel like it could be spectacular, with more refined editing. The story is an interesting fantasy, blending magical characters in age old battles.

I found it difficult to start the book, with as the main character was not one I warmed up to. However, the supporting characters interested me enough to keep reading. There are times when the story lags, with too much description, when all I wanted was for the plot to move along.

Looking forward to the next installment!

The Gods of Men (Gods of Men, #1)The Gods of Men by Barbara Kloss
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This epic adventure is a worthy read! It is a bit heavy at first, with lots of information and many characters, it can be a bit overwhelming. It may help to reread sections, to make sure you have it all in order. By the time I was a quarter of the way through the book, I was completely captivated. The plot is not predictable, and the characters are layered. I almost wish there was a soundtrack, to bring the music that guides this journey to life. Can't wait for the next book!
